Each piece begins with intention and ends in surrender - wet pigment pulled through water, color blooming across paper in ways that can never be replicated. These are one-of-a-kind mixed media works, each one a unique moment captured in color.
Every spring during peony season, I would walk through my favorite shop in the flower district in New York City and see colors I never expected. They had the usual white, soft pink, and magenta that are always lovely but quite common; and they also had more alluring varieties in deep crimson, almost-black burgundy, and coppery apricot. I could lose hours just standing there, going bucket to bucket, taking it in, and having the hardest time deciding which ones I wanted to take home with me.
This pair is an ode to peonies, showcasing all of those colors together. Rich magenta and burgundy move through both pieces in loose, liquidy layers, with warm gold breaking through like that coppery apricot catching light. One piece opens into a bloom in the upper corner, petals loosening as if caught mid-opening. The other pulls the same colors into deep, horizontal bands, dark plum drips cutting down through the layers as pale white breaks through beneath them.
This pair was painted in two different styles, but with the same palette and energy, creating interest that surpasses each piece as individuals.

I was nineteen, in the middle of a hard year for my self-esteem, when I saw a red dress in a store window and knew it was the one. I wore it to a sorority party, as the date of a guy I had a huge crush on, though we were only going as friends. I had no idea yet who I was becoming. But that night, in that dress, with deep red lipstick I thought of as my power lipstick, I felt beautiful and strong, while everyone else around me wore black.
This piece carries that same power, the deep red of a dress that made a nineteen-year-old girl feel unstoppable, even if for just a night. Deep red moves through this piece in full, generous layers, with warm gold and copper threading throughout like light caught in something ancient. Soft blush and cream open the composition wherever the color needs room to breathe, and sage green appears quietly through the detail like something living pushing through rich earth. Dark brown grounds the lower layers, giving the whole piece a sense of weight and rootedness beneath all that warmth.
This piece was made with presence, breath, and complete surrender to what the paint wanted to do.

I was fifteen, on a family vacation in the Caribbean, on one of those Jolly Roger pirate cruises that I now recognize was basically a booze cruise for the adults on board. I was a painfully shy kid, not much less so as a teenager, and when the head “pirate” called for a volunteer to walk the plank, my hand uncharacteristically shot straight up before I could think twice about it.
They took me below deck, tied a loose blindfold over my eyes, and had me hold a rope behind my back so it looked like my hands were bound. Then came the story: a stowaway found on board, and the whole boat chanting "walk the plank" as I was led out, a pirate with a sword at my back, until I reached the edge and was pushed into the ocean.
This was years before I developed a fear of sharks that's kept me mostly out of the water since. That day, I felt no fear, only fierceness, the fierceness of a girl who raised her hand before she could think twice. Looking back, it feels like the first glimpse of a woman who would keep stepping into visibility, not for attention, but because that's how she'd learn to move past her fears and live a bigger life. It would take me years to understand that same fierceness is still in me, that I can call on it whenever fear creeps in and threatens to hold me back. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is look to who we were as children and let them show us how to live more courageously.
This pair carries the fierceness of that moment, walking to the edge and choosing to jump. Bright copper and gold move through both pieces like sunlight hitting the surface of the water. Blue moves through in waves, pale and glassy in places, deepening into teal in others, the way the ocean shifts color the further out you go. Blush and cream open up the space between, and touches of deep green and deep brown settle into the edges, like the last thing you'd notice before going under.

Each canvas begins with a single word chosen in meditation, painted over and over into the under-layer, infusing the piece with its energy before a single brushstroke of color is laid down. What emerges from that foundation is something that could only have come through in that specific moment, in that specific state of presence.

My Journey
Hi, I’m Jennifer Flanders, and my journey with art didn't begin because I wanted to be an artist. It began because I was searching for peace, for presence, and for a way back to myself. What I found in the art studio was more than I ever expected.
Before every painting begins, I clear the space, call in the energy, and create the conditions for something sacred to emerge.
